BIB's art by Puech Haut

It is time to separate facts from fiction. Yes, Bag in Box (BIBs) wine is not necessarily a cheap quality wine and Nordics customers are particularly aware of it.

The four Nordics account for 33% of the world BIBs exportations and 33% of the French BIBs exportations. Sweden and Norway are among the top five countries of worldwide BIB imports. In Norway, this category accounts for almost 40% of wine imported volume. Denmark and Finland are closely following this trend.

So, what’s inside the box?

It has long been considered as a cheaper - and not necessarily better - alternative to bottled wine. Unique qualities of this container are now recognized by the consumers, professionals, restaurants and sommeliers.

Barely present 20 years ago, BIBs keep on moving into the wine areas and find their place in consumers’ kitchen. Beyond the packaging, it is the quality upgrading of the BIBs, at especially attractive prices, that explains such a craze.

French producers went with the flow, and France is now ranking 4th exporter in terms of volume upfront Italy and Spain, behind Australia, South Africa and Germany.
